The notice on the lamp-post reads - Home tutor in History wanted: other subjects also an advantage. Only half an hour's distance. The notice goes on to explain that Mr. Collins seeks extra tuition for his family who are bettering themselves and even studying for examinations; and there is an address. M is forced to shield his eyes from the street-light glare to make out the detail, but finally he has it and with a smile looks round for someone to help him with directions. He finds himself standing at a five pronged crossroads and, there being no-one in sight and silence down all directions, happily sets off along one of the streets, a small excitement fizzing inside him despite previous life telling him that never does anything come of these chance finds.
